BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE COMPETITION

British Parliamentary Debate Competition is one of the efforts shown by the Unit Bahasa of Jabatan Pengajian Am in preparing a platform for the students to show their talent in public speaking. The aims of this competition are to encourage students in using English Language, to promote competition spirit among students, to increase students’ level of confidence in public speaking and to prepare a platform where students can enhance their English Language proficiency by participating in competitions.

PMM Elocution Contest 2015
A contest of public speaking

Broadly speaking, the word “elocution” refers to one’s manner of speaking or oral delivery. It is hoped that the programme would benefit the students in terms of improving their language proficiency and boost their confidence level. In whole it is hoped that through this programme students will be able to practice their language, hence, improve their speaking skills in general.


Guidelines for participating in PMM Elocution Contest 2015

· This competition is open to all students of semester 1 & semester 2 & semester 3. (Each department must submit 5 names per programme)
·There will be 2 rounds in the competition.
·1st Round- A 5 minutes talk by participants’ on prepared speech.
·         Technical co-ordinators will announce the topics for prepared speech on 02/03/15.
·         The prepared speech is to be of five (5) minutes duration on a topic chosen by contestants.
·         Speech notes are not allowed during the presentation.
·         Cue or palm cards are permitted; however, their use is to be unobtrusive and should not affect the speaker’s visual engagement of the audience.
·         A warning bell will be given at the end of four minutes, then at five minutes.
· 2nd Round – participants will get 2 mins to speak on the given impromptu topic.
·         A warning bell will be given at the end of one minute, then at two minutes.

ENGLISH CLASSROOM BLOG COMPETITION (ECBC)

Rules and Conditions

1.  Eligibility:
a)    Open to all semesters 1,3 and 5 students for all five main departments (JKA,JKM,JKE,JP & JPH)
b)    Participants must produce and upload a blog entry.
c)  All participanting group must email your new gmail address, new blog address, names and MyKad number for all of the 3 members, mobile contact number of the 3 members, code of your class and the name of your English language lecturer to pmmecbc2015@gmail.com
d)    Each class must create 1 blog as entry. (3 bloggers from each class)
e)  Each class must make 6 post according to the week.
     
2.  Themes:
a)    Semester 1: Travelling
b)    Semester 3: Environment
c)    Semester 5: Education

3. Deadline for submissions is 16 March 2015.

4. The submitted entry must meet the category outlines as they appear in the competition details.

5. The competition is specifically intended for new blog entries only. Blog entries published later than 16 March 2015 will not be accepted.

6. The entry must be between 200 to 350 words.

7. The stories provided must be in English Language.

8. Each blog entry must be the entrant’s original work, in its entirety, and must not infringe on the intellectual property or other rights of any other third party, regardless of country of residence. It is the entrant’s responsibility to clear all aspects of copyright.

9. The organizer reserves the right to disqualify from the competition any blog entry which infringes the copyright or other intellectual property rights of third parties. The organizer is not responsible or in any way liable for any violations of copyright or any other unauthorized use of images/graphics/video or other content of submitted entries. 
10. Any blog entry containing rude, unlawful, discriminatory or sexually explicit material will not be accepted. Any entry containing promotional material, endorsement or advertising will not be accepted.

11. The selection committee will determine the three prizes for each semester of 1, 3 and 5.

12. Decisions taken by the selection committee should be considered final and cannot be appealed.

13. Winning entries may be published on the organizer blog: http://pmmecbc2015.blogspot.com/.
 the organizer reserves the right to publish all or any of the non-winning stories on the organizer website, other relevant websites and for non-profit use by the organizer and its not-for-profit partners. The publication may also included edited versions of the original pieces.

INTERNATIONAL AWARENESS DAY

This is competition where you get to be a representative of a country of your selection and educate your audience on the culture and heritage of the selected country. Let us celebrate the diversity of cultures throughout the world through creative use of language on:

RULES & REGULATIONS:

·         Open for all SEM 1 and SEM 2 students
·         Participation is by group; each group consists of 10 members
·         Each department need to send at LEAST 2 teams.
·         Pick a country and focus on BACKGROUND, COSTUME & TRADITIONAL FOOD (compulsory).
-          The suggested countries include Thailand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India, Korea, Brazil, Netherlands, Spain, South Africa (you can pick any chosen country that you like)

·         You are free to use any method to explain on the selected country (demo, slide show, etc)
·         Each team is required to decorate their booth according to their country and they are required to orally explain on the 3 compulsory aspects to the judges.

It is also aimed to encourage students in using English Language and increase students’ level of confidence in front of audiences. READING ALOUD ACTIVITY
INTRODUCTION
Reading aloud is basically a reading activity with a twist. Instead of academic text, participants are given a storybook to read. This storybook is essentially a script based on folk cultures with an underlying message of universal truth.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this activity is to allow students to explore their creative side in pronouncing the words while at the same time allow the students to practice their pronunciation skills.
This activity also promotes teamwork, as they are required to read their intended lines while at the same time they need to anticipate their teammates' line.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
There are several things that need to be adhered to by all participants:
1. The number of participants allowed in a team is 10.
2. Each department has to send a team.
3. The respective department has to pick/choose their respective students for this competition.
4. The organising committee will be responsible in providing the intended reading materials and the organisation of the competition only.
5. The respective teams are going to be TRAINED BY THEIR RESPECTIVE DEPARTMENT.
6. For the teams, they will be given chairs and microphones during the competition.
7. If the team(s) wanted to bring additional props, it is on the discretion of the team.
8. During the competition, the teams are required to be present for the drawing of lots. Failure to do so will render the team to be disqualified.
9. The adjudication process will be tasked to the guest adjudicators chosen by the organiser.
10. For the competition proper, it is going to be a single staging for all the teams i.e. the teams will perform based on their drawn lots (1,2,3..) for ONE TIME ONLY.
11. The teams are going to be adjudicated based on their performance as a team.
12. The winner will be decided based on the highest score obtained.
13. The organiser will be THE SOLE DECIDER for any disputes and the decision made is FINAL.

Rhythm of English Competition 2015 (REC2015)
One of the things that make English difficult to understand for students is its particular rhythm. Rhythm is the sense of movement in speech, which is marked by the stress, timing and quantity of syllables. This competition is aimed to test your ability to pronounce English words in rhythm with the correct stress and quantity of syllable. You will be given a choice of selected English songs and you are required to sing the song with the appropriate pronunciation and rhythm.

RULES & REGULATIONS:
i) General
 Open for all students of Politeknik Merlimau

SPELL-IT-RIGHT 
Spell-it-Right Competition 2015 is an effort by the English Language Unit of Jabatan Pengajian Am Politeknik Merlimau in developing and improving students spelling skills. This program aims to develop students’ vocabularies and ability to try new words (not just words they know). Hence, this program is hoped to enhance students’ confidence in spelling our English words.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
·         to improve students’ command of English Language
·         to increase students’ level of motivation in using English Language
·         to develop students’ interest and confident in spelling English words
RULES AND REGULATIONS
There will be THREE (3) rounds for this competition.
1.    Each department need to send 3 participants from semester 1 or semester 2 students.
2.    The first round requires all participants to spell 3 words elementary level. This will determine the top 15 participants that will proceed to the next stage.
3.    In the second round, the top 15 participants is required to spell 2 intermediate-level of words. This round will determine the next 6 participants to move to the final stage.
4.    During the final round, the top 6 participants would have to spell 3 words advance level. The winner will be judged based on the result of the final round.
All decisions made by the judges are final.

TREASURE HUNT

Treasure Hunt can be played as individuals or teams competing for time. It’s fun to play either inside or outside. The goal of the game is to lead the seekers through a set of clues that takes them from place to place to find a treasure. The “seekers” need to read each clue they find and figure out the next location. It is  a great activity to do with family, friends, at a party or a bit of weekend fun

RULES AND REGULATIONS


1.      All Teams MUST consist of 6 members with one of the member is a lecturer. Teams are encouraged to stay together and work collectively to complete each of the challenges. You may not split up to “divide” tasks. Every department need to send 2 teams.

2.      The Treasure Hunt consists of twenty clues, each one leading to one or more treasures.

3.      The points awarded for clue completed with 10 marks, once each task has been  completed, the team may proceed to the next station.

4.   Playing Fair.  Have fun and try to win. But don’t let your competitive instincts drive you to ruin other peoples’ chances to win.  If you do, your team will be disqualified. That means no sabotaging, lying, cheating, stealing, or copying other people’s work.

5.  Participants may not ride in automobiles or any vehicle in order to travek from one station to another.

6.      Disqualification will result from any of the following: (a) failure to turn in completed  
challenges, (b) cheating—sabotaging, copying from, or stealing from other teams.

10. Do not search for clues in off-limit areas. If you move anything to search an area, put it back the way it was before you leave. No clues have been hidden in woodpiles, rock walls, etc., and no structure should be dismantled. Team captains should make this very clear to their member.

12. In the interest of fairness to all teams, computers and IT devices of any kind must be strictly off limits during the Treasure Hunt. Consequently, personal phones may not be used during the Hunt. You must rely on your team members only.

14. Team captains are responsible for seeing that their groups member in good conditions during the competition.

15. All decisions by the judges are final.
